Produce managers across America witnessed something bizarre this week.
Customers kept fondling every avocado in sight while staring at their phones.
And Chipotle launched one marketing campaign that left grocery store managers completely scratching their heads.
The Great Avocado Hunt of 2025 Just Wrapped Up
Chipotle’s "AvoLotto Sweepstakes" officially ended yesterday after a wild three-day run that turned grocery stores nationwide into unexpected marketing battlegrounds.
The Newport Beach, California-based chain partnered with Snapchat to create an AR lens that recognized real avocados – and the results were exactly what you’d expect when you tell thousands of people they can win free guacamole for a year.¹
From July 28 through July 30, customers flocked to produce aisles armed with smartphones, scanning every avocado they could find using Chipotle’s "AvoLotto Lens" on Snapchat. Up to 1,000 users per day struck gold, earning themselves 52 weeks of free guac.²
The campaign wrapped up just in time for National Avocado Day on July 31, when all Chipotle Rewards members could score free guacamole with any regular-priced entrée using the code AVO2025.
Grocery Stores Became Chipotle’s Unwitting Partners
The genius of this campaign wasn’t the technology – it was the strategy. Chipotle essentially commandeered every produce section in America as free marketing real estate.
"Each year for National Avocado Day, the holiday that has become synonymous with Chipotle, we find new and creative ways for fans to score our hand-mashed guac," said Chris Brandt, President and Chief Brand Officer. "We only use real ingredients in our restaurants, so when we worked with Snapchat to create ‘AvoLotto,’ we had to make sure that it only detects real fruit."³
That authenticity angle wasn’t just marketing speak. Chipotle’s guacamole contains just six real ingredients: "whole avocados, hand-chopped cilantro, red onion, jalapeno, citrus juice and kosher salt." Crew members show up at 6 a.m. every morning to prepare Chipotle’s real food using traditional culinary techniques.
The campaign built on Chipotle’s previous Snapchat partnership from 2023, when the companies worked together on promoting Lifestyle Bowls through an AR lens featuring exercise and meditation prompts.⁴
Numbers Behind the Avocado Madness
The AvoLotto promotion tied directly into Chipotle’s broader loyalty strategy. Winners had five days to enter their Snapchat codes into their Chipotle Rewards accounts – a requirement that drove membership growth in the chain’s expanding loyalty program.
The campaign integrated seamlessly with Chipotle’s "Summer of Extras" program, which runs through August 31. Members who opted into this initiative earned extra points, exclusive badges, and rewards for completing monthly milestones.
An interactive dashboard tracked members’ performance against other users in their state, including competitive insights like "Team Guac or Queso Blanco."
During Chipotle’s second quarter earnings call, CEO Scott Boatwright revealed telling numbers about their digital engagement strategy. Their Summer of Extras program attracted about 5 million participants, with approximately 40% making actual purchases.
"We had about 5 million people participating in the program, of which about 40% of those transacted. We also saw enrollments go up about 14% year-over-year," Boatwright said. "We drove incremental frequency versus normal behavior across all frequency bands, including low frequency. Of the 5 million, 2 million were low-frequency users that are now engaging with the brand throughout summer on a more consistent basis."⁵
Why This Campaign Actually Worked
Here’s what most people missed about the AvoLotto promotion: it wasn’t really about the technology. Chipotle used flashy AR to solve an old-fashioned business problem – driving customer loyalty in a crowded market.
The campaign forced potential customers to physically engage with the Chipotle brand experience outside of restaurants. Every grocery store visit became a potential touchpoint with the chain’s marketing message.
Those numbers matter for a company operating more than 3,800 restaurants across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates.⁶
Unlike most chains that rely on franchisees, Chipotle directly controls all its North American and European locations. That gives them a massive advantage when rolling out consistent technology-driven marketing experiences.
National Avocado Day has become Chipotle’s unofficial holiday over the years. They’ve systematically turned it into an annual customer acquisition machine that drives both immediate sales and long-term loyalty program growth.
The Broader Marketing Lesson
The AvoLotto campaign represents what Chipotle called its "biggest free guac drop in history." That language signals serious confidence in using creative partnerships to drive both engagement and sales.
The real innovation wasn’t the AR technology – Snapchat already had object recognition capabilities. The breakthrough was convincing thousands of customers to become unpaid brand ambassadors in grocery stores nationwide.
Every person scanning avocados while friends watched created organic word-of-mouth marketing that money can’t buy. The campaign generated curiosity, drove app downloads, and boosted loyalty program enrollment simultaneously.
The success of this promotion could become the template for how fast-casual chains think about extending their marketing reach beyond traditional restaurant boundaries. Sometimes the smartest innovation builds on proven fundamentals – like the universal appeal of free food and the power of making customers work just hard enough to earn it.
