Atherton has no downtown, no traffic lights, and fewer than ten thousand residents.

Palo Alto Online reported Atherton's median sale price sat at $8.3 million when it lost the crown in 2025.

Fox Business has spent 2026 tracking a steady stream of billionaires and founders bolting California for Texas, citing a proposed wealth tax and the state's business climate.

Travis Kalanick, Uber's co-founder, fled to Texas on December 18 – fourteen days before a one-time 5 percent tax on billionaire net worth would have hit him for roughly $180 million.

His own words say everything about how California treats its richest residents: "Let's just say it's prior to January."

Newsom's team gets to wave around a real estate ranking as proof the state still wins.

Kalanick's $180 million tax bill says the opposite.
