Anthropic's Claude AI assistant is arguably leading the pack in the emerging tech oligopoly ordained by the elites.
But something happened over the weekend of July 25 to 27 that left the tech giant completely exposed.
It could be the biggest threat they’ve faced yet and the exposure traces straight to a share feature generating public links only intended for specific people.
What Happened
Users on Reddit discovered that a large number of conversations shared through Claude were showing up in Google search results.
The exposure came to light after users ran targeted search strings, including "site:claude.ai/share," directly into Google.
Doing so returned dozens of shared conversations without needing the original link from the person who created them.
That feature is what was affected.
Private unshared conversations were not part of the exposure.
Some of the indexed content reportedly included sensitive material.
Reports cite health information, private company documents, cryptocurrency wallet keys, and personal names, addresses, and phone numbers, including those of children.
Claude's Artifacts, the interactive documents and mini-apps users can build inside conversations, also turned up in the same searches.
One indexed conversation, labeled as shared by Anthropic itself, reportedly contained explicit material that ran counter to the company's own content policies.
The issue appears to have stemmed from the share pages not being properly excluded from search engine indexing, typically done through a noindex tag.
Once a link was posted anywhere public, such as a forum or a social media post, search engines were able to crawl and index the full page content.
The incident has drawn comparisons to a similar episode involving OpenAI's ChatGPT.
In that earlier case, shared conversation links were also found to be publicly indexed.
Timeline of the Exposure and Fix
A Reddit user first flagged that Claude share links were appearing in Google search results on Saturday, July 25.
The issue was reported by 404 Media on Monday, July 27.
TechCrunch, Fortune, and other outlets picked up the story shortly after.
By Monday afternoon, test searches using the same method described in the original Reddit post no longer returned results.
That suggests Anthropic had made a fix.
Removing a page from search results does not delete or revoke the underlying link.
Anyone who saved or bookmarked a share URL beforehand may still be able to open it.
What Anthropic Said
An Anthropic spokesperson told Fortune and TechCrunch that the company gives users control over whether to share conversations publicly.
The spokesperson said that, consistent with the company's privacy practices, Anthropic does not submit chat directories or sitemaps to search engines like Google.
Anthropic said share links are not guessable and are only discoverable if a user chooses to share them.
The company added that once someone makes a conversation public via the share feature, that content is treated like any other public web content.
That means it can be archived or indexed by third parties.
The company frames the issue less as a breach of private data and more as a gap in how those already-public pages were handled with respect to search engine crawling.
What Users Should Do
Anthropic advises reviewing active shared links under account settings, under Privacy or Shared Chats.
Users should delete any shared links that are no longer needed or that contain sensitive information.
Users should assume shared means public.
Any conversation shared via a public link should be treated as potentially visible to anyone, not just the person it was sent to.
Posting a share URL to a forum, social media, or any public channel increases the chance it gets indexed or found by others.
That should be avoided.
Revoking or deleting a share link removes it going forward.
It cannot retrieve or erase copies already saved, cached, or archived by someone else before the link was pulled.
More broadly, users should avoid sharing sensitive material through public links.
This includes legal documents, financial details, health information, credentials, or anything involving minors, regardless of which AI platform or feature is being used.
