Ismael Vega set a CHP patrol car on fire with officers trapped underneath during the 2025 Los Angeles riots.

Vega Torched Cardboard and Waited for the CHP Cruiser to Roll Underneath
On June 8, 2025, two days after violence exploded against federal agents enforcing immigration law, a mob gathered on the Main Street overpass above U.S. Highway 101 in downtown Los Angeles.
CHP officers were stationed directly underneath, holding the line while the city burned around them.
Vega and his crew ripped up cardboard and vegetation, doused it, and set it ablaze.
Vega admitted he lit a chunk of cardboard himself and timed the drop so it landed square on the hood of a CHP cruiser below.
His co-defendant Yachua Mauricio Flores then poured accelerant onto the flames to make the cruiser burn harder.
Vega stayed at his side, pointing at the fire as it climbed.
Prosecutors say Vega admitted he knew exactly where the officers were trapped.
He threw the burning debris anyway.
Then he picked up rocks and hurled those too, aiming at officers who were trying to clear the overpass and get out alive.
One CHP sergeant with nearly three decades on the job wrote a statement describing what that night did to him and to his son.
Federal prosecutors called the case one that "stood apart in its magnitude."
Judge Walter Handed Down 37 Months and a Six Figure Bill
United States District Judge John F. Walter sentenced Vega to 37 months in federal prison on Monday.
Walter also ordered Vega to pay $253,415 in restitution for the damage he helped cause.
Vega pleaded guilty in April to one count of obstructing, impeding, and interfering with law enforcement during a civil disorder.
Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli did not wait long to spike the football.
Essayli said anyone who attacks officers protecting public safety will land in federal prison for it.
"Let this be a warning to others who think they can act without consequences," he wrote on X.
Vega is not walking into that cell alone.
His co-defendant Flores faces sentencing on August 3 and up to five years behind bars.
The alleged ringleader, Adam Charles Palermo, faces up to 20 years when he stands before Walter in December.
Every one of them chose that overpass, that cardboard, and that CHP cruiser.
Every one of them is about to pay for it in a federal cell, not a courtroom press conference.
The Pattern Extends Far Beyond One Overpass
Essayli's office has now charged more than 50 people connected to the summer 2025 Los Angeles riots.
Several defendants have already pleaded guilty rather than face a jury with this evidence stacked against them.
The pattern is not confined to California.
In another Los Angeles case, an illegal immigrant drew four years in federal prison for hurling a Molotov cocktail at Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies during that same summer of unrest.
The judge in that case said the attacker endangered both the deputies below and a lawful protester nearby.
These are not isolated hotheads who got caught in a bad moment.
They are foot soldiers in an organized wave of street violence aimed directly at the people enforcing immigration law that Congress passed decades ago.
Vega's sentence is the fifth handed down in this specific case alone, with two more defendants still waiting their turn.
The Message Essayli's Office Just Sent to Every Rioter Still Free
Here is what should fire up every reader who watched Los Angeles burn in June of last year: these rioters bet that mob cover would protect them.
They bet that enough smoke, enough chaos, and enough sympathetic coverage from the legacy press would keep them out of federal prison.
Vega bet wrong.
Thirty-seven months and a quarter million dollar bill is what happens when a man sets a police car on fire with officers trapped inside it.
Essayli's office is not slowing down either, with dozens of cases still working through the system and two more sentencing dates already locked in for Vega's accomplices.
Every rioter still out there congratulating themselves on getting away with it in 2025 should look hard at what just happened to the man who lit the cardboard.
The overpass mob thought they were untouchable with officers trapped below them.
A federal judge just proved otherwise, one defendant at a time.
