Now it has state and local politicians butthurt but not for the reason you think.
John Wilson Turned an ICE Sweep Into a 29 Million Dollar Rent Machine
Operation Metro Surge was never a small story.
Federal officers arrested more than 10,000 criminal illegal aliens in Minneapolis alone – the very people Gov. Tim Walz's sanctuary policies had let roam free for years, according to DHS.
Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin didn't mince words about who let it happen.
"Tim Walz and Jacob Frey failed to protect the people of Minnesota."
That single sentence should have been the end of the story.
Instead, biotech entrepreneur John Wilson decided the real victims of Operation Metro Surge were the illegal aliens who got left behind.
A 2023 stock sale put $257 million in Wilson's pocket and became the seed money for his new foundation.
Wilson Wolf Manufacturing, the cell and gene therapy company he built, is worth nearly a billion dollars.
The Wilson Foundation is now sitting on roughly $80 million in cash, and Wilson has already spent $29 million of it on rent for immigrant households.
Wilson's foundation has cut roughly 20,000 rent checks so far, and the money keeps moving at about a million dollars a week.
Wilson can move money faster than government aid for one simple reason – there are no restrictions attached.
No income verification, no immigration status check, no red tape of any kind standing between his money and the recipient.
Democrats Wanted the Same No Questions Deal With Your Tax Dollars
Wilson isn't operating in a vacuum, and Minnesota Democrats made that plenty clear this spring.
State Senate Democrats introduced a $40 million emergency rental assistance bill in March to backstop the same population Wilson was already bankrolling.
Republican state Sen. Steve Drazkowski warned his colleagues exactly what that bill would fund.
He pointed out that Hennepin County households alone stood to collect more than $7,000 apiece, and he doubted ICE had rounded up every illegal alien left in the county.
Senate Democrats passed the bill anyway, and Gov. Walz publicly backed it.
Republicans in the state House balked, and have stopped the bill for the time being there ever since.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey wants to put another $1 million of city rental aid on the table, and Wilson's foundation has agreed to match it if the council signs off.
Minneapolis and St. Paul have each already kicked in roughly $1 million of their own for the same rental assistance effort, according to Minnesota Reformer.
DHS tied those arrests to killers, sex offenders, gang members, and financial fraud schemes.
Walz himself raised eyebrows in July when he questioned whether deporting an illegal alien child molester he had once pardoned actually made anyone safer.
That's the same governor now cheering on a rental aid program with zero built-in screening.
Wilson's Money Machine Is Bigger Than One Feel Good Headline
This isn't charity anymore – it's a parallel welfare system with none of the accountability government aid at least pretends to have.
Government rental aid still forces applicants through some kind of eligibility check, at least on paper.
Twenty thousand payments and a million dollars a week is not a GoFundMe, it's an operation with the scale of a small state agency and the oversight of a lemonade stand.
And it's happening in the exact state where sanctuary politicians spent months refusing to hand ICE detainers on rapists and killers.
Put those two facts side by side and the pattern is obvious – protect the criminal illegal alien from federal law enforcement, then backfill the household economics with unaccountable cash, public or private, whichever moves faster.
Drazkowski called this exact scheme back in March.
Minnesota just proved him right twice over – once with tax dollars, once with a millionaire's checkbook.
