Prince Andrew used his daughter Beatrice as his “Pizza Express” alibi while she sat in the room helping him plan the interview.
Now the Epstein files have exposed what she actually did to protect him – and the royal journalist who defended her for decades just publicly admitted he was a fool for it.
What Beatrice did behind closed palace doors before that infamous 2019 BBC interview is the thing her defenders never wanted you to know.
Princess Beatrice Was in the Room When Andrew Planned His Newsnight Interview
The moment Andrew sat down with BBC Newsnight interviewer Emily Maitlis in November 2019, the British royal family's credibility began its long collapse.
What most people don't know is that Princess Beatrice was in the room.
Not as a bystander. Not as emotional support. Beatrice attended pre-interview planning meetings alongside her father, notepad in hand, and reportedly advised him to take part in the first place.
Newsnight producer Sam McAlister – the woman who spent months negotiating the interview – later revealed she was blindsided when Andrew showed up to a key meeting and said, "I hope you don't mind, I brought someone along."
Beatrice, then 31 and engaged to marry, pitched in during the meeting, read what people were writing about him online, and functioned as his strategic partner.

Then Andrew sat down on camera and used her as his alibi – claiming he'd taken Beatrice to Pizza Express in Woking the very night Virginia Giuffre said he assaulted her.
She helped plan the denial. He used her name to execute it.
The interview was universally described as a disaster. Andrew claimed a medical condition prevented him from sweating. He said he had no memory of meeting Giuffre. He stepped back from royal duties days later.
What the Epstein Files Revealed About Beatrice That Changed Everything
For years, Daily Mail royal journalist Richard Eden was one of Princess Beatrice's most consistent public defenders.
His position was sympathetic and logical: why should the daughters be tainted by the sins of their father? Eden met Beatrice numerous times at London social events and found her impressive – friendly, businesslike, sensible.
Then the Epstein files landed.
The US Department of Justice released more than three million pages of documents in January 2026, and Beatrice's name appears in them more than 200 times.
Eden just wrote that he now feels "guilty for having acted as one of their media cheerleaders."
The emails changed his mind.
Andrew sent Epstein photographs of Beatrice and Eugenie years after claiming on Newsnight to have cut all contact with the convicted sex offender. Sarah Ferguson told Epstein it was "important" to brief the press that he was being unfairly characterized – and cited her then-22-year-old daughter Beatrice as someone who agreed with that strategy.
Beatrice wasn't watching from the sidelines. According to Eden, she was an active participant in managing her family's relationship with one of the most dangerous predators in modern history.
Eden had long told himself that Beatrice helped arrange the Newsnight interview out of a genuine belief in her father's innocence. He no longer believes that.
Prince Andrew Arrest Puts the Whole Family Under Investigation
Andrew was arrested on his 66th birthday – February 19, 2026 – becoming the first member of the House of Windsor arrested in 379 years.
Thames Valley Police took him in on suspicion of misconduct in public office, centered on emails suggesting he shared confidential trade envoy information with Epstein between 2010 and 2011. He was released after 12 hours of questioning, still under investigation. A conviction carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
King Charles issued a statement saying what follows is "the full, fair and proper process."
What the files show is a family that spent years protecting a man who was one of the most prolific sex offenders in American history. Andrew denied it on television. His daughter helped him plan the denial.
British royals expert Hilary Fordwich told Fox News Digital that Beatrice and Eugenie now face "the untenable choice of whether salvaging their own futures must prevail, given even their maiden York name is so toxic."
Beatrice has two young children and is trying to stay away from it all now.
The problem is she was never just the daughter standing at a respectful distance.
She was in the room.
