China keeps flooding the Pacific with warships while America's fleet keeps shrinking every year.
A ship called the USS Essex just closed part of that gap in the middle of the ocean.
What that crew figured out how to build on their own should have Beijing worried.
A Warship Becomes A Factory
The USS Essex is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, and last month it did something no American warship has ever done at this scale.
While sailing from San Diego to Hawaii for RIMPAC 2026, the crew and a company called Firestorm Labs turned part of the ship into a working drone factory.
They printed more than 1,000 parts.
They assembled 12 flight-ready Squall FPV drones.
They did it in two weeks, underway, with zero help from any port.
The containerized system is called xCell, and it kept running straight through sea state 5 conditions – 12-foot waves that would have most sailors holding onto the walls.
The crew did not just print drone parts either.
They fixed broken hardware on the fly – inspection tools, replacement fittings, even a mount for the ship's satellite internet gear – whatever the deck needed that day.
No waiting on a supply ship. No flying parts in from Guam. No paperwork trail through five different commands.
Firestorm Labs summed up why that matters in a statement: every part printed on deck "doesn't need to be flown or shipped across contested waters – cutting the fuel, aircraft hours, and personnel it takes to keep a ship operational."
That is the entire point of this experiment, and it is a bigger deal than most people realize.
China Is Studying The Same Drone War Ukraine Won
Ukraine already proved something to the entire world – whoever can build and replace drones the fastest wins the fight, not whoever has the fanciest one on day one.
Russia learned that lesson the hard way when Ukrainian factories kept churning out cheap FPV drones faster than Moscow could shoot them down.
China has been watching that same war just as closely as Washington has.
Beijing's entire Pacific strategy depends on stretching American supply lines thin – submarines, missiles, and mines aimed at the cargo ships and aircraft that keep a carrier group running.
Cut those supply lines and an American warship becomes a very expensive, very slow target sitting alone at sea.
A ship that can print its own drones and its own spare parts does not need those supply lines nearly as much.
That is the entire strategic nightmare this trial just handed to Chinese planners – an American fleet that gets harder to strangle the longer a fight drags on, not easier.
The Navy is calling this its containerized capability campaign, and RIMPAC 2026 is running the largest at-sea additive manufacturing test the military has ever attempted.
Twelve drones in two weeks sounds small until you realize that number scales with every ship that gets one of these units bolted to its deck.
Multiply that across a battle group and Beijing is no longer looking at one factory ship – it is looking at an entire fleet that resupplies itself.
Under an administration that has made rebuilding naval power a real priority instead of a talking point, this is exactly the kind of innovation that keeps America's edge in the Pacific instead of watching China close the gap year after year.
