Fox News, ABC, CBS, and NBC all agreed to stop covering Trump's pool events in one coordinated walkout.
The protest was supposed to defend CNN, Politico, and MS NOW after the White House banned all three.
Then Kaitlan Collins turned up at the United Nations, and Trump had a greeting ready for her.
The Walkout Sprang a Leak at the United Nations
It started on September 18, when Trump banned CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from the White House.
"Media Outlets shouldn't be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they're covering the President," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
By Saturday, September 19, reporters from all three outlets were turned away at the gate.
The rest of the networks closed ranks.
On September 21, Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, chair of the television pool, sent the order.
"Effective today, the TV pool will not be covering events designated as pool coverage of the President," Boughton wrote.
Fox, ABC, CBS, CNN, and NBC put out a joint statement.
"The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government," the networks declared. "No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting."
Then came the UN General Assembly, the biggest stage on the diplomatic calendar.
The networks technically kept their boycott by pulling UN video feeds instead of White House pool footage.
And CNN's Kaitlan Collins was right there in New York.
Trump spotted her.
"I'm surprised that CNN is here covering me," Trump said. "You said you weren't going to cover me."
Real America's Voice stepped in to handle presidential pool duties while the legacy networks sat it out.
The Empty Pool Is Causing Real Problems
Nobody should shed tears for the networks that pushed the Russia collusion story for two straight years.
But the walkout is creating logistical headaches that go well beyond hurt feelings in the briefing room.
The pool is a rotating group of about 20 journalists who travel with the president everywhere he goes.
They document his movements, share audio and video with every outlet in the country, and make sure there are cameras in place if an emergency breaks out.
When the pool walked, the gaps showed up immediately.
At a September 21 press conference, Trump could not be heard on the White House-provided video because it had no usable audio of his remarks.
C-SPAN declined to air his White House helipad ribbon-cutting because there was no independent pool feed.
That would be a small problem in quiet times.
These are not quiet times.
Trump stood before the UN and warned he could "annihilate" Iran if Tehran refuses a peace deal.
Diesel is at a record $6.53 a gallon.
The Strategic Petroleum Reserve is sliding toward its legal floor.
And the people who normally ask the follow-up questions are not in the room.
A White House Press Room With Empty Chairs During a War
The networks are playing martyr, and they are loving every minute of it.
CNN gets to wrap itself in the First Amendment, and Fox gets to prove its independence to the Washington press club.
Trump's frustration with outlets that have smeared him for a decade is earned.
But whoever convinced him a blanket ban would shut the networks up misjudged how they would respond.
Instead of silencing CNN, the ban handed every network a reason to walk out together.

The better move is more reporters, not fewer.
Real America's Voice proved in a single day that new media can carry pool duties just fine.
Open the doors to the outlets that have been locked out of the old club, and the networks' boycott loses its leverage overnight.
With America at war with Iran, deeply involved in Ukraine, and gas prices climbing, Americans need someone asking questions every single day.
