The Daily Show Celebrated 30 Years By Making The Same Claim That Got Jon Stewart Busted On Live TV

Jon Stewart spent decades insisting The Daily Show was never partisan.

A current Daily Show host just repeated that same claim on the show's 30th anniversary podcast.

Then he said something that proved the exact opposite on tape.

Correspondent Jordan Klepper and fellow host Ronny Chieng recorded a special episode of the show's anniversary podcast, 30 F#@king Years: The Daily Show Remembers, to mark three decades on the air. Chieng asked Klepper straight up whether the show still calls it evenly the way it did when Stewart ran it.

Klepper's answer was that he grew up with no team, and that "balls and strikes is a great way of calling it."

Then he kept talking.

Klepper said the show found its footing at real turning points, comparing the current moment to the Iraq War era, when he says the show zeroed in on one target instead of playing both sides. He said that's exactly how he sees the Trump era now. One big thing. One target. Zero interest in pretending otherwise.

An umpire doesn't spend three decades ejecting the same team from the game and call it balls and strikes.

Conservative media critics who reviewed the same podcast episode didn't buy the umpire routine either, pointing to three decades of segments mocking one party's voters while the show gives the other side a pass the moment it drifts left of center.

The Show Has Been Making This Same Claim Since Crossfire

This isn't new. Stewart told Fox News host Chris Wallace on-air years ago that he was a comedian, not a political player, even as he built his career mocking one side of the aisle. Stewart went on CNN's Crossfire in 2004 and tore the show apart on live television for lacking nuance, a moment credited with getting the program canceled and host Tucker Carlson fired months later.

Every generation of Daily Show talent runs the same play. Deny the label. Insist it's about truth, not politics. Then spend the next segment torching Republicans by name.

Klepper isn't the exception. He's the pattern repeating itself on a fresh microphone.

The Timing Makes The Denial Even Harder To Believe

Klepper made these comments while working for a network that just got a new owner. Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison, son of major Trump donor Larry Ellison, took over the company through a merger that closed after Paramount paid Trump a settlement over a 60 Minutes lawsuit. Weeks before Klepper's podcast, Ellison hosted a private dinner honoring Trump just ahead of the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Klepper has publicly said he's fine with the new ownership and thinks the show's reach has only grown.

Klepper works for a boss who just threw a party for the president his show mocks every single night. Pick a lane.

Democrat Comedians Keep Getting Caught Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud

Klepper isn't the only Comedy Central voice who slipped this year. When Republicans held hearings on Anthony Fauci's pandemic record, Klepper dismissed the entire proceeding as a "performative partisan filter," then immediately pivoted to defending Fauci's record himself. That's not an umpire. That's a defense attorney who forgot to take off the jersey.

Thirty years of practice hasn't taught The Daily Show how to hide it. It's taught them how to say the word "partisan" with a straight face right before proving they know exactly what it means.

Grandpa didn't need a media studies degree to catch that one. He just needed ears.
