Country music superstar Jelly Roll has taken on one of the most sacred songs in American rock history.
The collaboration with Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd marks a monumental moment in music.
And Jelly Roll just delivered one jaw-dropping tribute that’s got Skynyrd Nation losing their minds.
Nobody knew it was goodbye
Picture this: Nashville’s holiest venue, November 22, 2022. Skynyrd fans pack the Ryman thinking they’re getting another killer show from the Southern rock legends.
Nobody realized they were actually watching history unfold in real time.
That night turned out to be the final performance of founding guitarist Gary Rossington, who passed away just five months later.
Johnny Van Zant revealed that Rossington had been very sick the week before the show and called to say he might have to sit down during the performance.
But something special happened when the 71-year-old guitar legend stepped onto that sacred stage.
"He came in, stood up, and said, ‘I ain’t sitting down,’" Van Zant recalled, his voice filled with obvious emotion.¹
Rossington joined the band for "That Smell" and remained on stage until the concluding encore of "Freebird".²
