Tourism Fiji just pulled off something nobody saw coming.
The beloved volleyball from Cast Away is back after 25 years.
And Fiji brought back ‘Wilson’ in one campaign that has travel fans cheering around the world.
Wilson Gets His Happy Ending in Paradise
Remember Wilson? That blood-stained volleyball that made audiences sob when he floated away from Tom Hanks in the 2000 blockbuster Cast Away?¹
Well, Tourism Fiji tracked him down.
The tropical paradise nation launched “Wilson’s Happily Ever After,” a heartwarming 90-second campaign that follows the iconic volleyball’s journey from castaway to contentment on Fiji’s pristine shores.²
In the new film, Wilson washes ashore on the white-sand beaches of Serenity Island Resort, where he’s discovered by a young Fijian girl named Lani. The campaign captures their adventures together – from biking old sugar cane rail tracks with Eco Trax to kayaking across crystal-clear waters, experiencing traditional Kava ceremonies, and yes, enjoying friendly games of volleyball.³
Created by Special PR and directed by James Anderson, the spot was shot on location by production company Radlab. But this isn’t just a clever marketing stunt.
“This campaign allowed us to showcase the intimate, everyday magic that defines a trip to Fiji,” explained Brent Hill, CEO of Tourism Fiji. “Fiji is more than a destination – it’s a place of happiness, connection, and renewal. Wilson’s story echoes what many travelers feel after visiting our islands.”⁴
Perfect Timing for a Tourism Boom
The campaign launches at a time when Fiji’s tourism sector is absolutely crushing it.
In 2024, more than 107,821 travelers from the United States visited the island nation – an 8% increase over 2023 and the highest number on record. This reflects America’s deepening interest in Fiji as a destination where culture, adventure, and natural beauty come together perfectly.⁵
Tourism Fiji saw North American arrivals rise nearly 20% in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. UK arrivals increased 20% in February and nearly 15% for the quarter overall.⁶
Across all markets, 2024 marked a record-breaking year for Fiji, with over 1 million total visitors, including nearly 83,000 cruise passengers and over 980,000 air arrivals.⁷
But here’s the real kicker – Fiji’s cinematic appeal has been driving tourism growth for years. Productions like Cast Away, Survivor, and Love Island USA have placed Fiji front and center for global audiences, turning its natural beauty into a supporting character on screen.
Love Island USA alone has become a cultural phenomenon. Skyscanner reported a 70% year-over-year spike in searches for Suva during the last season, with a 46% surge following the popular Casa Amor episode.⁸
Wilson Becomes a Cultural Icon
Let’s be honest – nobody expected a volleyball to become one of the most beloved characters in movie history.
But Wilson captured hearts worldwide when Cast Away hit theaters in December 2000. The film, starring Tom Hanks as FedEx executive Chuck Noland stranded on a deserted island for four years, grossed $429.6 million worldwide and became the third-highest-grossing film of 2000.⁹
Wilson wasn’t just a prop – he was Hanks’ only companion during those lonely island years. Named after Wilson Sporting Goods, the volleyball manufacturer, the character was created by screenwriter William Broyles Jr., who actually stranded himself on an isolated beach for a week while researching the film.¹⁰
The original Wilson props have become serious collectibles. In December 2024, a screen-matched original Wilson volleyball sold at Heritage Auctions for $162,500.¹¹ Another Wilson prop reportedly sold for over $300,000 at a different auction.¹²
Wilson Sporting Goods even launched its own promotion around the film’s release, manufacturing volleyballs with a reproduction of the bloodied handprint face – which they still offer on their website today.¹³
Fiji’s Film Industry Boom
But Wilson’s return isn’t just about nostalgia. It highlights Fiji’s growing presence in the global film and content production industry.
In the 2023-2024 fiscal year alone, international productions contributed nearly $45 million USD to the Fijian economy, supporting more than 1,200 local jobs and nearly 300 small businesses.¹⁴
“Beyond the story of Wilson, this campaign is a love letter to the natural beauty and cultural richness of Fiji – and to the world-class talent that lives and works here,” Hill added.¹⁵
Harry Willis, PR Director at Special PR, perfectly captured the campaign’s appeal: “It’s not every day you pitch a volleyball comeback, but it makes total sense. Bringing Wilson back is a playful way to share what makes Fiji so special, through a character everyone knows, and loves, and has probably cried over. It’s nostalgic, unexpected and joyful, like all the best travel stories.”¹⁶
Wilson Goes Global Again
The campaign isn’t stopping with just the heartwarming film.
Tourism Fiji is rolling out a physical activation across Australia, where Wilson volleyballs will wash ashore on Bondi Beach in Sydney, St Kilda Beach in Melbourne, and Gold Coast Main Beach in Queensland on July 24th. The first beachgoers to spot them can scan a QR code to win a trip to Fiji.¹⁷
Wilson’s Sporting Goods is also running a promotion where customers spending $250 online or in-store are automatically entered to win a Fijian getaway.¹⁸
Digital engagement has soared alongside the campaign launch, with Tourism Fiji’s website traffic increasing by 313% and their social following surpassing 1 million.¹⁹
Fiji continues earning global acclaim too. The destination was recently named one of the Top 25 Islands in the World and the No. 1 Island in the South Pacific in Travel + Leisure’s 2025 World’s Best Awards. Lonely Planet named it the #3 destination to visit in 2025, while Condé Nast Traveler named it the No. 1 Island in the South Pacific in their 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.²⁰
For North American travelers, Fiji delivers on its promise of authenticity and warm hospitality. Wilson’s journey offers a timely reminder of the happiness that comes naturally across these stunning islands.
After 25 years, Wilson finally found his way home.
