Elon Musk Warns AI Risk Is Increasing Exponentially and Wants Rivals Watching Each Other

In 2023, Elon Musk signed a letter warning that artificial intelligence could end humanity.

This week he stood on a stage in Los Angeles and said the danger has only grown since then.

Musk says there is one fix left, and it means AI companies spying on each other before it's too late.

Musk Says the Danger Is Already Out of Control and Getting Worse

Musk delivered the warning at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles.

"The danger of AI is very significant at this point," Musk told the crowd.

He said the risk is not holding steady. It is climbing exponentially, year over year, as the models get smarter.

His fix is blunt. Every major AI company should test its rivals' models instead of grading its own homework.

"What I think would be wise to do as soon as possible, if not immediately, would be to have the major AI competitors test each other's models," Musk said.

"So instead of grading your own homework, you would at least have competitors grading your homework, and raising the alarm if they see concerns."

Musk laid out exactly what is at stake for any company that gets caught covering up a dangerous model.

"If competitors say that this model is unsafe, and that model then subsequently does something bad, I think it would be extremely hard to live down," Musk said. "The legal liability would be enormous."

The Pattern Musk Has Been Warning About Since 2023 Just Got Data Behind It

Musk is not the only one saying the clock is speeding up.

Researchers at METR, a nonprofit that tracks frontier AI capability, found that the length of a software task an AI model can complete on its own has been doubling roughly every seven months since 2019.

By this summer, that doubling time had shrunk to roughly every four months.

That is the "exponentially increasing risk" Musk is talking about, measured instead of guessed at.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published his own essay the same weekend, calling on labs to "pace the frontier" rather than race blind.

"Pacing does not mean halting model training or technical progress," Amodei wrote, "but ensuring companies take adequate time to align and safeguard their models."

Sam Altman backed the idea within hours. "We will do the same," he said of building outside evaluators into OpenAI's own testing.

Musk's response was two words: "Dario is right."

Washington Is Not Stepping In, Which Leaves Musk's Plan as the Only Check on the Table

Trump made clear this week that he is not interested in Washington playing referee.

"The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT," Trump posted.

"WHOEVER WINS AI, WINS! We are leading China, and all others, and will continue to do so."

That leaves no federal umpire and no pause button. Just the AI companies themselves, racing each other toward more powerful models with nobody outside the industry checking their work.

White House AI adviser David Sacks was quick to question the specific evaluator system Amodei and Altman are pitching, warning that the outside group they want to use, METR, is "literally intertwined with Anthropic's investors and staff."

That is a fair fight over the fine print of Amodei's plan.

It is a different question than the one Musk raised on that stage, which was simpler: let rivals check each other's work before one of them loses control of a model nobody can walk back.

Right now, in an industry moving faster than any regulator, that is close to the only safeguard anyone in a position to build one is actually proposing.
