Dramatic Footage Shows Beachgoers Tackling Suspect Who Mowed Woman Down on the Boardwalk

A stolen Tesla sent a 25-year-old woman to the hospital with a fractured spine and broken ribs on a crowded San Diego boardwalk.

Witnesses tackled the driver themselves after he ditched the wrecked car and ran.

What those beachgoers didn't know is that California had already let this man walk free three times.

California Let Him Stay Free and Beachgoers Do the Job That San Diego Authorities Wouldn't

Juan Antonio Gonzaba allegedly stole a Tesla sedan out of La Jolla on the afternoon of September 14, 2026.

San Diego police spotted him on Mission Boulevard and gave chase.

Officers pulled back when Gonzaba slammed the Tesla into an electrical transformer, worried about public safety.

Gonzaba didn't stop.

He steered the wrecked Tesla straight onto the packed Pacific Beach Boardwalk.

He plowed into a 25-year-old woman at Thomas and Reed Avenues, fracturing her spine, breaking two ribs, and tearing open a gash that took twenty stitches to close.

Then he jumped out and ran on foot.

That's when ordinary people on the boardwalk did what the police pursuit couldn't.

Witness Alex Srour chased Gonzaba down while recording on smart glasses, and a crowd of bystanders swarmed in behind him.

They held Gonzaba on the pavement until officers arrived and put him in cuffs.

San Diego Fire Department spokeswoman Candace Hadley summed up what everyone on that boardwalk felt: "This is a very busy boardwalk, having someone drive through this area is incredibly frightening."

The Rap Sheet Prosecutors Already Knew About

Gonzaba is no stranger to a courtroom.

His record includes convictions for assault, battery, burglary, and grand theft.

Three separate times, courts handed him mental health diversion instead of jail.

He's also racked up a history of probation violations and blown court dates.

Deputy District Attorney Tyler Nigut said Gonzaba showed signs of being under the influence when he plowed into the woman, with blood test results still pending.

Gonzaba pleaded not guilty Wednesday to assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run, and auto theft, and he's now being held without bail, facing up to 24 years and 8 months if convicted.

Held without bail now is easy.

Held without bail three arrests ago would have spared a 25-year-old woman a fractured spine.

What California Keeps Refusing to Learn

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon's office handed Jade Simone Brookfield mental health diversion after she stabbed a woman in the chest in 2020, then diverted her again after she attacked a peace officer in 2021.

Brookfield went on to fatally stab father of two Dennis Banner in 2023.

Troy Davis walked free on California's zero-bail policy after a car theft arrest, skipped his court dates, and later murdered 61-year-old Mary Kate Tibbitts.

Her brother Dan Tibbitts put it plainly: "She would be with us today if it were not for reckless 0 bail policies rejected by voters but still being pushed by politicians."

Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig ran the numbers on zero-bail releases and found suspects freed without bail were rearrested on 163 percent more charges, reoffended 70 percent more often, and faced violent crime accusations at three times the rate of those who posted bail.

Reisig didn't mince words: "The impacts of zero bail on violent crime are obvious, and they're horrific. I mean, we have more people being shot at, stabbed, assaulted, robbed, beaten."

San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson has been pushing Assembly Bill 46 to fix the same broken mental health diversion system that kept handing Gonzaba second chances.

Sacramento built the revolving door.

San Diego beachgoers are the ones who had to slam it shut, tackling a stranger on a public boardwalk because the state wouldn't keep him locked up after the first three tries.
