Donnie Wahlberg Revealed the One Condition for Getting Tom Selleck Back As Frank Reagan

CBS pulled the plug on Blue Bloods while it was still one of the most-watched shows on television.

Tom Selleck has made it plain he isn't sure he wants to put Frank Reagan's badge back on.

Now Donnie Wahlberg says there's one way to get him back, and it won't be easy.

Wahlberg Says Selleck Will Only Return for an Episode Worthy of Frank Reagan

Wahlberg plays Danny Reagan on Boston Blue, the spin-off that moved the Reagan family's toughest detective from New York to Boston.

The show premiered in October 2025 and opened its second season on October 9, airing Friday nights at 10 – the same slot Blue Bloods owned for years.

Sonequa Martin-Green co-stars as Detective Lena Silver, Danny's Boston partner.

The new season opens with Danny and Lena working a crash that nearly killed Lena's boyfriend, who also wears a Boston badge.

Danny is also working more closely with his son Sean, played by Mika Amonsen, which gives the show the same father-son spine that made the original work.

Promoting the new season in an interview with People, Wahlberg said he wants his TV father on the show at some point.

But he also knows Selleck won't walk through that door for just any script.

Wahlberg said it will take "the most thoughtful, elegant episode" that he and co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis can put together.

He added that Selleck will do it, but "it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously."

Selleck Is Still Angry About How CBS Ended Blue Bloods

Fans remember why this is complicated.

Blue Bloods ran 14 official seasons and 293 episodes before CBS ended it in December 2024.

Selleck insists it was really 15.

He had played Frank Reagan since the show premiered in 2010, and the role became the defining part of his second act.

He has never hidden how much the cancellation stung.

"My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go," Selleck said.

He wasn't exaggerating.

By his count, Blue Bloods was the number six show on broadcast television in its final year.

Selleck told Ted Danson – Sam Malone himself – on his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, that the cast had already swallowed a 25 percent pay cut to keep the show alive.

CBS killed it anyway.

So when Selleck was asked about jumping onto the spin-off, he didn't rush to say yes.

He sat down with Hour Detroit in November 2025, during a visit for the city's unofficial Magnum P.I. Day.

"I don't think it's my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan," he said.

He also said he wasn't sure he would do Boston Blue, calling it another show.

Bridget Moynahan and Len Cariou Already Came Back to the Reagan Table

The spin-off has not been shy about bringing the family back.

Len Cariou returned as Henry Reagan, the retired commissioner and family patriarch.

Bridget Moynahan came back as Erin, and Marisa Ramirez returned as Danny's old partner, Maria Baez.

Will Estes is set to return as Jamie Reagan in season two.

That leaves one empty chair at the head of the table.

And that chair is the reason millions of Americans tuned in every Friday night for 14 years.

Frank Reagan Was the Lawman Hollywood Stopped Making

Frank Reagan was a police commissioner who backed his cops, said grace before dinner, and never apologized for believing in right and wrong.

Hollywood stopped writing men like that a long time ago.

Blue Bloods proved there was a massive audience for him anyway, and CBS executives still treated it like an afterthought.

Selleck has earned the right to be picky.

At 81, what he has always cared about is whether the work is any good.

That is why the network ending a top-10 hit still bothers him, and that is why he won't come back for a throwaway cameo.

He carried Magnum, P.I. through the 1980s, made nine Jesse Stone movies, and anchored CBS's Friday nights for well over a decade.

Wahlberg understands that better than anyone, because he has worked opposite Selleck since the very first episode.

Done right, a Frank Reagan episode would be the biggest night Boston Blue has ever had.

If CBS wants Frank Reagan back, the network owes him exactly what Wahlberg described – a script worth his badge, not a quick ratings stunt.

Get that right, and Frank Reagan will be home for Sunday dinner.
