Rhode Island state Representative Enrique Sanchez swore a day of reckoning was coming for ICE agents doing their jobs.
The Department of Homeland Security did not stay quiet about a sitting lawmaker threatening federal officers.
What DHS revealed next about Sanchez's own Providence neighborhood left him with nowhere to hide.
Sanchez Has Called ICE Agents Nazi Gestapo Thugs Before
Sanchez posted his threat on X this week, writing that "fighting and dealing with ICE" had left him "f***ed up in the head."
Then came the part that should get him a visit from federal investigators.
"Your day of reckoning will come motherf***ers," Sanchez wrote. "I swear to god."
This is not a one-time outburst.
Sanchez called ICE officers "Nazi Gestapo thugs" back in August 2025 after agents detained a Providence man he described as a "neighbor."
That neighbor, according to reporting on his record, was tied to MS-13 with a fentanyl trafficking history.
Two weeks after that post, Sanchez was already talking about a coming "day of reckoning" – this is at least the second time he has used the phrase.
A pattern like that is not heat-of-the-moment anger.
It is a state legislator building toward a threat, one post at a time.
DHS Fires Back With the Rap Sheets Sanchez Left Out
DHS did not wait to respond.
The department noted that ICE officers are now facing a 1,300 percent increase in assaults against them while making arrests.
Then DHS did something Sanchez clearly did not expect: it named names.
Phet Phommasinh, a criminal illegal alien from Laos, was convicted of homicide, assault, and aggravated assault with a weapon.
Mariel Valdez Nunez, from the Dominican Republic, was convicted of human trafficking.
Touthtou Sengsavang, also from Laos, was convicted of child molestation, failure to register as a sex offender, and selling cocaine.
DHS made the point directly: these are the men Sanchez is defending when he attacks the agents who arrested them.
Sanchez was not calling for reform.
He was demanding that dangerous criminals stay on Rhode Island streets.
The Law Sanchez May Have Just Broken
Federal law does not treat threats against ICE agents as protected political speech once they cross a specific line.
Title 18, Section 115 of the U.S. Code makes it a crime to threaten a federal law enforcement officer with intent to intimidate or retaliate for doing their job.
Sanchez's post checks nearly every box in that statute.
He named the target, ICE agents, and he tied the threat directly to their enforcement work.
Prosecutors will look at intent, and Sanchez gave them plenty to work with by repeating the same threat twice in two months.
A defense attorney could call it hyperbole.
A grand jury might call it something else entirely.
Sanchez Also Has a DUI Problem He Would Rather You Forget
Sanchez was arrested for drunk driving in February 2025, the same year he began escalating his rhetoric against ICE.
He was ultimately allowed to plead down to a minor offense after a deal was struck.
A man who cannot follow basic traffic law is now telling federal agents they will face a reckoning for enforcing immigration law.
Providence voters keep sending him back to the State House anyway, and he first won the seat running unopposed in the general election.
Sanchez's Own Family Story Cuts Against Him
Sanchez comes from people who did it the legal way.
His grandfather arrived from Puebla, Mexico, decades ago and opened what became Providence's first Mexican grocery store in 1988.
That storefront grew into a real family legacy, and Sanchez relatives now run several of the city's best-known Mexican restaurants.
That is the kind of immigrant success story Sanchez claims to be fighting for.
Instead he is spending his political capital defending a convicted human trafficker and a twice-convicted child molester.
His grandfather never needed to threaten a federal agent to build something real in Providence.
Sanchez cannot tell the difference between the neighbors his own family lifted up and the criminals he now calls neighbors, and that confusion is the whole story.
