Axios told Americans mass deportations were costing them thousands of dollars.
The outlet forgot to check what illegal immigration was already costing them every year.
Their own numbers just proved Trump's deportations are the cheaper option.
The Math Axios Didn't Want You To See
Axios ran a report this week claiming Trump's deportation efforts cost the average taxpayer 2,358 dollars.
The framing was obvious: deportations are expensive, so stop them.
Democrats have been pushing this line for months, arguing that money would be better spent on food assistance, healthcare, or housing.
There's a problem with that argument, and it's sitting right there in the numbers Axios published.
A one-time removal cost of a couple thousand dollars is not the same thing as a bill that shows up every single year.
Deportation is a one-time expense.
Illegal immigration is a subscription.
Illegal Immigration Already Drains Billions Every Year
The American Enterprise Institute puts the annual fiscal burden of illegal immigration at roughly 1,156 dollars per taxpayer, or about 957 dollars once you account for the taxes undocumented immigrants pay in.
That bill doesn't go away after one year.
It comes back in year two, year three, year ten.
Run that math over a decade and the number Axios wants you outraged about turns into a bargain.
The Heritage Foundation and the Center for Immigration Studies have been making this same case for years: pay once to remove someone who shouldn't be here, or pay every single year for as long as they stay.
Axios picked the second option and called it fiscal responsibility.
Even Their Own Side Did The Math Faster Than They Did
Federalist co-founder Sean Davis saw the same numbers Axios published and needed one sentence to demolish the framing.
"That's a bargain at 10x the price given what illegals cost the country," Davis wrote.
That's the whole story in a single line.
Axios spent a full report trying to make deportation sound reckless, and a guy on the internet did the actual math in the time it takes to read a tweet.
What The Recurring Bill Actually Looks Like
Break the AEI numbers down further and the case gets even stronger.
AEI puts the taxpayer cost at roughly 8,776 dollars for every person here illegally, every single year they stay.
Multiply that by however many years someone sticks around and the savings argument Democrats keep leaning on collapses fast.
A single removal ends that annual bill for good.
Letting someone stay means writing that same check year after year, with no end date attached.
Axios wanted a headline about cruelty.
Instead they published a spreadsheet that argues for the policy they were trying to attack.
Democrats Want To Spend That Money Twice
That argument only works if you ignore where the current bill is already coming from.
Illegal immigration is already straining the very welfare programs Democrats claim to want to protect.
Every dollar spent on services for people who entered the country illegally is a dollar that isn't going to the American families those programs were built for.
Axios never asked that question, because the answer doesn't fit the narrative.
Trump's team didn't need to spin these numbers.
Axios spun them first, and the spin fell apart the moment anyone did the actual math.
Democrats Own The Math They're Trying To Hide From
Democrats and their friends in the media have spent a decade telling you that enforcing immigration law is the expensive choice.
They never show you the other side of the ledger, because the other side of the ledger proves them wrong.
Every dollar spent removing someone who crossed the border illegally is a dollar that stops recurring next year and the year after that.
That's not journalism working against Trump.
That's math working against Democrats, and math doesn't care about anyone's feelings.
The next time someone tells you deportations are too expensive, ask them what it costs to do nothing – because Axios just showed you, whether they meant to or not.
